The University of Konstanz is a centre of excellence in teaching and research, with a reputation spanning well beyond national borders.
One of the Top Eleven
Founded in the 1960ties, the University of Konstanz represents a role model for smaller, leaner and more compact universities promoting the integration of research into teaching. Top-level research, excellence in teaching and studies, internationality and interdisciplinary collaboration stand for it as a young, modern campus university.
In 2007 and 2012, the University of Konstanz proved its outstanding research qualifications by competing successfully in the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments becoming one of the eleven top-level research universities in Germany.
Interdisciplinary and international study opportunities
Study opportunities are offered in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Arts and Humanities as well as Law, Economics and Politics. In three tightly structured faculties with their interdepartmental collaborative research units, academic teaching develops out of the current state of research. Following this principle, many of the 100 and more study programmes have an interdisciplinary approach including a range of international course offerings taught in English and providing double degree options. Over 10.000 students coming from more than 90 countries are enrolled here and represent 12% of the student body. With more than 250 partner universities worldwide, the university is part of an expansive global network of learning opportunities.
Konstanz - cross-border living
Studying at the University of Konstanz means cross-border living and learning at one of Germany's top recreational destinations situated at the international triangle of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The city of Constance, with its unique location on the banks of Lake Constance and the River Rhine as well as its proximity to the European Alps, is the ideal location for studying in an exciting international setting and an attractive natural environment. Its medieval town and green surroundings ensure a high quality of living in a very safe and green environment.
All on campus
All departments and services are located on the university campus, right on the shores of Lake Constance and within easy reach from the city centre. The university's first-rate infrastructure includes an excellent 24-hour library, state-of-the-art computer facilities, a language institute offering a wide variety of foreign language courses and one of Germany's most renowned sports facilities.
In the Times Higher Education Ranking »THE 100 Under 50« (THE 2016) which focuses on younger universities, the University of Konstanz has achieved an outstanding 7th position in the worldwide comparison and even improved last year's top ranking. This excellent international position makes Konstanz again one of the best German university amongst those assessed all of which are under 50 years old.
Other outstanding rankings regularly confirm the exceptional quality of our study programmes, such as in the CHE University Ranking in 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 on the departmental level, and the "International Student Barometer " (ISB), a worldwide survey on the international student experience: Among the student support services, the International Office of the University of Konstanz was rated no. 2 worldwide in the ISB Survey 2013 . Top ratings were also achieved in the learning categories “top research” and “quality of lectures” as well as the living categories “host friends” and "visa advice".
